Professionally trained and equipped
Auxiliary Deputies can be seen at
community functions throughout the
county. They work as needed at
special community events, emergencies, and occasional high school sports events. The Deputies typically provide these events with a uniformed law enforcement presence, traffic control, enforcement of order and the control of alcohol.
Law enforcement training for the Deputies begins with a departmental orientation and a 40-hour state mandated firearms training course. Training continues throughout the Auxiliary Deputy's career.
Auxiliary Deputies are certified in; use of deadly force, weapons qualification, Pressure Point Control & Defense Tactics (PPCT); oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray; and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Auxiliary Deputies must perform a minimum of 12 hours of duty assignment each month and attend a training meeting. The officers must pass regular firearms qualifications and are on call for special assignments and emergencies.
The Auxiliary conducts monthly continued-training sessions. The curriculum for the continued training is based on the standards established by POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) and the University of Illinois, Police Training Institute.
Subjects include Illinois Laws, Use of Force, Verbal Judo, Crime Scene Preservation, Patrol Procedures, PPCT, Defensive Tactics, School Shooting Procedures, ISPERN & Radio Procedures, Active Shooter Response, Domestic Violence, Fundamentals of Investigation, and much more.
Throughout the year an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff will receive approximately twenty-five hours of in-house training. This includes re-certification in First Aid/CPR, and firearms qualification.
